DETAILS OF THE VISIT: –

Product Range: –
Nandini produces various products to meet the public’s demands, including milk powders, butter, ghee, cheese, Yoghurt, ice cream, frozen desserts, and chocolate. Of an estimated 1.6 crore litres of milk produced daily in Karnataka, of which about 1.2 crore litres is marketable, KMF procures about 80 lakh litres, translating to almost 70% of the milk produced.

KMF has also set up the Nandini Milk Products Unit to meet the ever-growing demand for milk-based sweets. This unit specializes in the production of milk-based ethnic sweets, including Nandini Premium Badam Burfi, Nandini Premium Cashew Burfi, Nandini Chocolate Burfi, Nandini Mysore Pak, Nandini Besan Ladoo, and Nandini Dry Fruit Burfi.

Summary of the visit:

We arrived at the Nandini Mega Hi-Tech plant at 11:15 a.m., and they introduced KMF and various KMF products in the reception area. After this introduction session, we went for lunch in the canteen. The staff at KMF-Nandini was very cooperative, and she accompanied us for lunch. After finishing our lunch, we visited various sections of the Nandini plant, starting with the unit where the task of pasteurizing milk takes place.

We also learned the introduction of the company profile and its present functioning in the dairy industry for different milk products. We witnessed all the sections one by one, where controlled machinery and employees worked all day long to reach the end goal of distributing the milk to the retailers.

Preparing all the milk products involves large-scale equipment and automation to ensure consistency and efficiency. Starting cheese production involves pasteurizing milk and separating curds into salting and ageing. Each step involves high technology to ensure quality. Entering the industrial setting where ghee is prepared, we know that ghee is made by simmering the butter until the water evaporates and the milk solids down.

Boilers with tons of capacity were right there doing their work. The most interesting fact we liked about the dairy plant was the hygiene they maintained, which is genuinely appreciated. The refrigeration unit was another place where students learned enough about refrigeration systems. Setting foot in the unit where the curd is processed and packed was also one of the good features of the entire visit.

After visiting each unit, we reached a place where our college bus was waiting. At 2:30 p.m., we left KMF—Nandini and reached our college at 4:00 p.m. Overall, the visit was informative and helped us develop our practical skills regarding tools and other activities in KMF. We learned about different types of machines used in KMF and had an opportunity to research them.
